The
Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) represent an ambitious
agenda for reducing poverty and improving the lives
of people around the World. The NDGs were agreed by
the World's leaders at the Millennium Summit in September
2000. For each goal one or more targets
have been set, most for 2015, using 1990
as a benchmark. The
Millennium Declaration is comitted to making the right
to development a reality for everyone. Also to free
the human race from want in an environment which is
conducive to development and to the elimination of poverty.
To this end, the Declaration is committed to promoting
democracy and strengthening the rule of law, as well
as giving respect for internationally recognized human
rights and fundamental freedoms. The eight goals are:
1 - Eradicate extreme
poverty and hunger
2 - Achieve universal
primary education
3 - Promote gender equality
and empower women
4 - Reduce child mortality
5 - Improve maternal
health
6 - Combat HIV/AIDS,
malaria and other diseases
7 - Ensure environmental
sustainability
8 - Develop a global
partnership for development
